September 2010 From DSS#59-Signals-- "Left" I love discovery in an image. Trying to be subtle, trying to keep the viewer engaged long enough to make the leap of discovery. For this image, I worked to subtley highlight and accent the bit, rein and hand so that each tied into the other. If you started at the hand, the rein would lead you to the bit. And visa versa. The discovery that the gentle tug from the hand sends a signal to move the horse. I added a pretty healthy dose of grain, with the thought it matched the pattern of the horse. The main downfall in the frame is the bright 'hole' between the riders torso and the horses neck. I missed that area. I think that area competes with the brightness of the hand and confuses my brain when I scan the image.
