MegaChallenge 10 - "Last"
Froch - End Of Lineage
I personally love the concept on this one. Where else do you become recognized to the world than through the phone book. You become someone, a citizen, known. My concept was to declare this is the end of this lineage. The last of this last name.
To be honest with myself, this one played out better in my mind than it did in pixels. The initial shot was done via extension tubes on my 50mm. Although I loved the result of the selective focus, it didn't play well enough for me to believe it...I opted to reshoot, partially because I wanted to recompose, and partially to see if I could replicate selective focus through photoshop and gauss blur. The end result is hack, at best...I was very disappointed with the final result. I couldn't quite get a grip on the proper opacity and hardness of the brush to make the blur believable.
DSS #61- Invention
Froch- "The Other 99percent"

Going off the expression, invention/genius/creativity is 1% inspiration, and 99% perspiration, I thought I'd try to use some of the lighting techniques I've been reading about, and try my hand at making sweat. I'm relatively happy about the lighting, but the sweat was just too large a drop and stream. This was the best of the 50frames.
Setup was with two speedlights. A gridded SB900 and an SB-600 bouncing off a flexfill at my feet . I'm amazed this is got any resemblance of focus, as these SP's with no help, usually result in frustration when you finally can see the card. Thanks to my daughter, or more to the point, one of my daughters stuffed animals, that now has a light stand stuck up it's rump, as it acted as a stand-in during the setup.
Lighting aside, there are major weaknesses in my techinque. All can be seen easily if you look. But I'm travelling to NY for a show Monday, so I had to work quickly today.
(in relooking at this, I decided to change the crop to push in on the eye, and sweat a bit more. Closer to my original thought. The gray in the mustache and the mouth of the original crop were bothering me.)
DSS#60- Leather or Lace
"Tough As Leather"

I’m continuing to challenge myself ‘within’ these DSS challenges. I’m trying to stay away from obvious subject matter, and attempting to select subjects which are more subtle. Archetypes, or clichés, hopefully with an element of discovery for the viewer.
This one comes about from a birthday party at a very cool paintball park. This is Adam, the birthday boys father. As soon as I saw this image on import, I knew this was my shot for “Leather”. His strong, rugged look is accented with steel blue eyes. In post, I worked to accent the creases in his face, but mainly worked to subtly raise the brightness level in the eyes. Trying to engage the viewer as they scanned the image and landed on his eyes. Unfortunately, he’s not looking at the camera, which would may have been a more powerful view. I’m still debating that. I also found a crop that worked to minimally include the vest he was wearing. The illusion it gives me is one of a bullet-proof vest, with hopes of strengthening the 'toughness' of the subject. Finally I added a dark vignette to focus the viewer, and I added a bit of grain to emphasize the ‘rugged’ look. Overall I’m very pleased with the pix.
DSS#59-Signals-- "Left"
I love discovery in an image. Trying to be subtle, trying to keep the viewer engaged long enough to make the leap of discovery. For this image, I worked to subtley highlight and accent the bit, rein and hand so that each tied into the other. If you started at the hand, the rein would lead you to the bit. And visa versa. The discovery that the gentle tug from the hand sends a signal to move the horse.
I added a pretty healthy dose of grain, with the thought it matched the pattern of the horse. The main downfall in the frame is the bright 'hole' between the riders torso and the horses neck. I missed that area. I think that area competes with the brightness of the hand and confuses my brain when I scan the image.
Removed from contest because I wanted it to be an honest representation
DSS #57-- Milk
Froch-- Got Milky Way ?

This particular image is an unfortunate 5hour mistake.
Having driven to the outskirts of Palmdale, to an abandoned structure I had seen months before in the desert. I knew my concept was going to be Got Milky Way. I planned for a long exposure to capture some star trails, while I lightpainted the structure and my "borrowed" prop telescope from ToysRUs.
With LongExp Noise Reduction set to High to kill the noise, and a 45mins exposure....I should have realized the camera was going to be working hard to mask that noise. In any event, I neglected to use a fresh battery, and the battery died on my return home, halfway between Palmdale and LA, while processing the image. Thankfully it didn't kill the file, but what it left was an image with huge chunks of noise. I decided to play with it, because B&W can be a saviour to poorly shot frames. I converted and saw that the noise resembled stars.
I opted not to use this image, because another shooter was submitting a similar concept of MilkyWay, which was gorgeous and true to the subject. I didn't want to submit something which was so far from honest.
DSS#56- Panning and Light Painting
Froch- D80 LightPaint
Not a thrilling submission to the challenge, having failed miserably on my panning attempts. I had hoped to light paint at the beach, but time wasn't on my side. I'm glad I wasn't able to go, as I learned alot from this smaller shoot, and feel I would have cost myself hours of time trying to expose properly. Having experienced the process on this smaller scale, I'm more confident to take the process to a bigger canvas.
For this shot, I exposed for roughly 3-4minutes. I modified a small LED flashlight to minimize it's beam, by taping the lens, and then building a small snoot to focus the light. My goal was to leave the overall exposure dark, and direct the viewers eye to the 'controls' of the camera, and obviously to highlight the Nikon name.
Dss #55 -- Stripes
Froch -- 'Arresting Stripe'
This was a found photo from a visit to the Annenberg yesterday. I hadn't really thought this would fit the challenge until I began posting it and the obvious stripe of the wall popped out, cutting thru the frame. I liked the idea that it wasn't typical in it's subject matter. Unfortunately I seem to be the only one who likes the image. And I honestly feel this is one of my best. Funny how tastes differ.
With that though, the image is not without problems in my opinion. Ideally, he would be a bit more centered on the wall, and his flipflop would be on his foot (since fixed for the final submission); and I would have had 15more seconds to compose. But I'm not unhappy with the composition. Although not symetrical, it works for me. Definitely a 'you get what you get, when you can get it' composition. I decided, in post, that I would center him in the frame, also giving him some 'headroom' and I would have the converging lines of the wall end at the top center of the frame. But with that, the right side of the wall, enters the frame just above the corner. I don't hate it, but it does bother me a bit. I've shuffled it around, and this is my compromise. The title is a fitting new addition. The word 'arresting' (defined as striking) seemed perfect to describe the 'striking', bold stripe cutting thru the frame, with a body 'resting' on top of it.
DSS #54- Cliche`
"Lazy Baker"
Once again, I found myself fixated on a concept that I'm certain no one will know, nor, is one that really is bringing the point home. In this image, the cliche` is "A Lazy Baker", which is a term coined by a favorite comedian of mine, JimmyPardo on his podcast, NeverNotFunny. The term relates to anything 11. Thus, a LazyBaker. It was suggested by a more than few people that I should have numbered the cupcakes, but because I prefer discovery in images, I opted to let the viewer, count, possibly re-count-- then hopefully grasp the concept.
The weak premise aside, I'm not unhappy with the technical side of the image. Another in my learning process of white light. This time using a fabricated softbox inspired by Strobist (David Hobby). There are a few issues with it, but overall, I'm happy with the result.
DSS Mega-Challenge #8-- Emergence
Froch- 'Moving Into The Light'
